If you hear the names of rashna or siamese ginger, you should know that they are talking about alpinia medicinal. There are other names – galanga or galangal. Alpinia is a grassy perennial that can reach a height of two meters; looks a little like reeds. Leaves are long, moderately wide – 30×2 cm. The flowers are white and have pink stripes. They are collected in a bunch and hang from the top of the stem. The fruits look like pale pink or red boxes with small seeds inside. Alpinia begins to bloom in March through the end of June.
The Chinese island of Hainan is considered the original place of alpinia growth, but it is also cultivated throughout Asia. Then the plant was brought to South America and Africa. Throughout time, alpinia has spread to all continents, and grows everywhere, in addition to Australia.
Health benefits and application of alpinia medicinal
Alpinia roots extend horizontally and branch out strongly. For therapeutic purposes, the root of an old, 10 year old plant is suitable. During this time, many useful elements have accumulated in the root.
Ready dried Alpinia root is sold in pharmacies, its name – Rhizoma Galangae (Latin). Or you can do the work yourself: clean the root from the ground, peel, cut into 5-centimeter pieces and dry.
The whole genus Alpinia has a pleasant, delicate aroma. Often the root of galangal is confused with ginger, but they are not similar. The ginger root tastes like a hot citrus, while Alpinia is sweet and spicy, similar to cinnamon. Galangal is considered an excellent seasoning for meat and vegetables. Alpinia spices are also used in the preparation of liqueurs and vinegars. Alpinia aroma can be used in perfumes and aromatherapy.
The multifaceted use of alpinia is famous in traditional medicine: malaria, cholera, heartburn can be cured with the help of this plant’s root. And this is not the end of its healing properties. The root soothes toothaches and can alleviate the condition of chronic enteritis. It also:

Cultivation of alpinia medicinal at home
It is easy to grow an alpinia on your windowsill or in the garden. Usually germinated in two ways – dividing the rhizome or planting seeds. The plant needs sand, humus and turf in the soil. In the first stages, shallow pots are best, which will provide Alpinia enough light and warmth. It is necessary to maintain a plant at a temperature of 71 °F in the summer, and not lower than 57 °F in the winter. When the period of active growth comes, it is desirable to water galanga every day, and add fertilizer every 14-16 days. Cut off withered shoots. In winter, alpinia falls asleep, so watering is less frequent – leaving the soil slightly moist.
Health recipes with alpinia medicinal
Tea: Loss of appetite.
- 2 tsp. alpinia root and 250 ml boiling water.
Pour the roots into the water. Cook for fifteen minutes, strain. Drink (sugar-free) three times a day before meals.
Spice: Seasoning for meat, fish, vegetable dishes.
Fresh root is separated from the roots and the aerial parts of the plant. Peeled root is cut into very small pieces and dried for several days. Spice shelf life – 4 years.
Swedish tincture of longevity: Diseases of the immune system and gastrointestinal tract.
- 10 g saffron root / 10 g rhubarb root / 10 g alpinia root / 10 g angelica root / 5 g myrrh / 5 g camphor / 5 g dwarfs / 5 drops of aloe juice.
Mix the ingredients. Pour quality vodka (solvent). Lastly add aloe juice. Tightly close the bottle and keep it out of the direct sunlight for ten days. Store tincture in the refrigerator.
Tea № 2: To strengthen the immune system.
Pour ethyl alcohol into powdered galangal. Let it rest for ten days. Take 15 ml before a meal, after adding juice or water to the tincture.
Compress: Skin cracks. Hemorrhoids.
- 1 tbsp. alpinia powder / 250 ml of water / a few drops of ethyl alcohol.
Mix the ingredients, make a compress, put on the damaged area of the skin.

- Until the 18th century, Europeans called alpinia – “Russian root”. Slavs added root to gingerbread and kvass to give a pleasant aroma.

The root was placed next to the coins to attract money. The powder of the plant was thrown into the fire to cleanse the room of evil energy. If the galanga could not be obtained, it was replaced with ginger, since they belong to the same family, but the effect was considered to not be as strong.
